Equibase Earnings Leaders: Thorpedo Anna’s Impressive Return Vaults Her Into Top 15
Following his brilliant performance in the $1.25 million Rebel Stakes last Sunday at Oaklawn Park, Coal Battle now leads the 2025 3-year-old division by earnings with $746,250 and is now second in the overall standings behind Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes winner White Abarrio.
The Rebel was Coal Battle’s fourth consecutive stakes win and fifth win overall, bringing his career earnings to $1,053,875. The son of Coal Front picked up 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve leaderboard and is now atop that list with 70 points for trainer Lonnie Briley. Briley, who has trained for nearly 34 years, earned his first career graded stakes victory in the Rebel.
Along with the Rebel, Oaklawn Park hosted a key 50-point race on the Longines Kentucky Oaks trail Sunday, the Honeybee Stakes. Quietside delivered a strong performance, winning by one length under the red-hot Jose Ortiz. That propelled her into the top 10 of the Thoroughbred standings, as she now sits seventh overall and fourth among 3-year-olds with $300,000 in earnings. The Malibu Moon filly has taken the solo lead on the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard with 68 points for trainer John Ortiz.
Alexander Helios earned the highest Equibase Speed Figure of the week, scoring a 113 in the Razorback Handicap Sunday at Oaklawn Park for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. He is now 2-for-2 in 2025, and ranks ninth in the overall Equibase earnings standings with $276,300.
Speaking of Joseph, the south Florida trainer became the first to surpass $4 million in earnings last week; however, Steve Asmussen continues to close the gap in the Equibase standings. Asmussen added six wins and $353,385 in earnings last week, narrowing the deficit to $236,103 behind Joseph. While the earnings race remains tight, Asmussen continues to dominate by wins, leading all North American trainers with 55 victories – 17 more than anyone else.
Jose Ortiz rode lights out last week, winning at a 47% clip and finishing with the most earnings of any jockey across North America with $801,860. Ortiz had 14 wins from 30 starts last week and 67% of his horses finished in the money, highlighted by a four-win day last Sunday at Oaklawn Park. Ortiz moved up four spots in the North American earnings standings for jockeys and is now fourth behind Irad Ortiz Jr., Tyler Gaffalione and Luis Saez.
