Contested on the all-weather Tapeta Footings surface, the stakes attracted an overflow field of 14 and will award the top five finishers Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve points on a 20-10-6-4-2 scale.

Distance: 1 1/16 miles

First held: 1982

1. Spirit Rags (20-1 morning-line odds): Comes off a front-running maiden win on this track. But his first victory came in his 11th start. Pass.

JOCKEY: Santo Sanjur; TRAINER: Marcelino Salas

2. Shan (30-1): Was third in two races on this track, the most recent effort coming in a stakes. Hard to picture him winning, but he could figure in the exotics again.

JOCKEY: Albin Jimenez; TRAINER: Ed Moger Jr.

3. Studlydoright (8-1): Won a New York stakes at a mile, but was fourth in his last two starts. Has a class edge here but he’s never raced on an all-weather surface. Tough call.

JOCKEY: Xavier Perez; TRAINER: John Robb

4. Calling Card (10-1): Disappointed in his two starts after a huge New York-bred maiden win. Didn’t fire on a sloppy track when eighth in the Lecomte Stakes but a second on turf last year could mean he’ll handle the surface here.

JOCKEY: Gerardo Corrales; TRAINER: Mike Maker

5. California Burrito (8-1): Comes off an impressive maiden win in his second start on the track. If he can duplicate that try he will be a major factor.

JOCKEY: Irving Moncada; TRAINER: Tom Drury

6. Banks (15-1): Won two straight on this track in December but was no factor in the Leonatus Stakes here as the favorite. Seems to deserve a second chance.

JOCKEY: Adam Beschizza; TRAINER: Joe Sharp

7. Baby Max (6-1): Won the Leonatus Stakes, drawing away at the end. Both efforts on the Turfway track are solid and he should be a major player.

JOCKEY: Abel Cedillo; TRAINER: Kelsey Danner

8. King of Ashes (15-1): Broke his maiden on the Tapeta surface at Gulfstream Park last time out. Seems to be getting better with each start and looms one of the main contenders.

JOCKEY: Declan Cannon; TRAINER: Brendan Walsh

9. First Resort (SCRATCHED): Makes his 3-year-old debut after winning the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in his final start of 2024. He’s been working sharply at Turfway and seems on edge for this start. Editor’s Note: First Resort was withdrawn from the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes on Feb. 21 due to stiffness in his right leg detected after a workout, trainer Eoin Harty announced.

JOCKEY: Luis Saez; TRAINER: Eoin Harty

10. Coming in Hot (5-1): Won his last two start here but they were both sprints. Landed a tough post to try two turns for the first time.

JOCKEY: Edgar Morales; TRAINER: John Ennis

11. Brereton’s Baytown (30-1): Won a Laurel Park claiming race last time out. He’s untested on an all-weather surface, making him even less appealing.

JOCKEY: Marshall Mendez; TRAINER: Paul McEntee

12. Maximum Promise (8-1): Posted a big maiden win, then had five months off and finished fifth in the slop in the Lecomte Stakes. Untested on an all-weather surface and a tough post, but trainer Ken McPeek has a habit of getting a solid effort in these type of spots.

JOCKEY: Luan Machado; TRAINER: Ken McPeek

13. Special Caliber (Also-Eligible entrant, 30-1): Will need a scratch to run after winning a slow maiden race here at Turfway.

JOCKEY: Evin Roman; TRAINER: Michel Douaihy

14. Maitre D (Also-Eligible entrant, 30-1): Maiden winner here will need two scratches to run.

JOCKEY: Evin Roman; TRAINER: Doug O’Neill
