The Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf is, more often than not, an international showcase, validating the “World” in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. It’s been dominated by horses shipping in from overseas ever since its first running as part of the premiere Breeders’ Cup at Hollywood Park in 1984. Foreign invaders have won eight of the last 10 editions of this Grade 1 stakes and it’s a good bet one of the seven entered among a field of 13 will do so this year as well Saturday at Del Mar.

The 2024 Longines Turf will go off at 5:01 p.m. ET Saturday, televised nationwide by NBC and streamed on Peacock.

Racetrack: Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Del Mar, Calif.

Date: Nov. 2

Purse: $5 million

Distance: 1 ½ miles on turf

Race: 7

Post Time: 5:01 p.m. ET

Notable winners: Auguste Rodin (2023), Rebel’s Romance (2022), Bricks and Mortar (2019), Enable (2018), Found (2015), Conduit (2009, 2008), English Channel (2007), Red Rocks (2006), Better Talk Now (2004), High Chaparral (2003, 2002), Chief Bearhart (1997), Tikkanen (1994), Kotashaan (1993), Theatrical (1987), Manila (1986), Lashkari (1984).

First held: 1984

1. Rousham Park (20-1 morning-line odds): Was 4-for-6 in 2023 and earned more than $1 million in his native Japan but has gone winless in four starts this year at age 5, although he did just miss taking a Group 1 in Japan by neck back in the spring. Prefers firm turf and has a Breeders’ Cup-winning jockey. Will need to step up big time in order to be a factor.

JOCKEY: Christophe Lemaire; TRAINER: Hiroyasu Tanaka

2. Emily Upjohn (5-1): Five-year-old mare is one of two females taking on males in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. She’s won only one of nine starts over the past two years, although that was a Group 1 on firm turf going 1 ½ miles back in June 2023 with Frankie Dettori in the saddle. Has finished third in her two recent starts, both Group 1s at 1 ½ miles in Europe, and can certainly hit the board here.

JOCKEY: Frankie Dettori; TRAINER: John Gosden

3. Shahryar (10-1): Another Japanese shipper, he finished well in the stretch to check in third in last year’s BC Turf at Santa Anita Park, and since then has raced only three times without a win. He did finish a clear second to Rebel’s Romance in March in the 1 ½-mile Longines Dubai Sheema Classic, and based on that race is worth a long look here.

JOCKEY: Cristian Demuro; TRAINER: Hideaki Fujiwara

4. Luxembourg (12-1): Coolmore runner was in fine form for over a year up until May, his only finish worse than fourth during an eight-race span coming when he was hampered by a fallen horse. He has not impressed in his two most recent starts, however, finishing sixth in a pair of Group 1s. Can post an upset if he gets back to his best – this horse has two Group 1 wins and three runner-up finishes at that level on his résumé.

JOCKEY: Ryan Moore; TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien

5. Jayarebe (4-1): Intriguing French-bred 4-year-old has won four of seven starts so far and finished second or third in two others. Jayarebe has not competed in a Grade/Group 1 yet nor has he tried a mile and a half, but he enters off of a game head win in a Group 2 at Longchamp in early October going 1 3/16 miles and still has plenty of upside.

JOCKEY: Sean Levey; TRAINER: Brian Meehan

6. Far Bridge (6-1): Has fulfilled the potential first witnessed in 2023 when he won the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes by taking two more at that Grade 1 level leading into the Breeders’ Cup — the Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer Stakes and the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes, both at 1 ½ miles. Has paired well with Joel Rosario and is probably America’s best hope for winning this race vs. the international jet set.

JOCKEY: Joel Rosario; TRAINER: Christophe Clement

7. Grand Sonata (20-1): Won his first race in over a year – after seven consecutive losses – by rallying and then holding on in the FanDuel TV Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes. Would need to improve off of that effort to have a chance at the upset here, and that’s a tall task.

JOCKEY: Tyler Gaffalione; TRAINER: Todd Pletcher

8. Cabo Spirit (30-1): Led gate to wire in the California Crown John Henry Turf Championship Stakes Presented by 1/ST BET at Santa Anita Park in late September to post a 24.60-1 upset against California-based grass runners. That occurred at a level a couple of rungs below this field (at least) and was his first win since October 2022, 12 starts back.

JOCKEY: Abel Cedillo; TRAINER: George Papaprodromou

9. El Encinal (30-1): Earned a “Win and You’re In” berth to this race back in December 2023 by upsetting a Group 1 stakes in his native Argentina. He then was transferred to the U.S. and has since finished a well-beaten sixth and 11th in two Grade 2 turf stakes in California. Seems overmatched.

JOCKEY: Armando Ayuso; TRAINER: Francisco Garcia

10. Wingspan (15-1): Joins Luxembourg from the Coolmore barn but compares more favorably to Jayarebe as a 3-year-old who has only made six starts and has shown plenty of potential without securing a top-level win in Europe, finishing second in a Group 1 at 1 7/16 miles in her most recent race. The Dubawi filly has an excellent pedigree and also has shown the ability to race on or near the early lead. Could hang on for a share here with the right trip.

JOCKEY: Wayne Lordan; TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien

Rebel's Romance (Eclipse Sportswire)

11. Rebel’s Romance (5-2): Globe-trotting sensation won this race two years ago at Keeneland with an impressive rally that put him 2 ¼ lengths in front at the finish. Went winless through three starts in 2023, including a race where he unseated his jockey at Saratoga, but has regained his best form – and then some – at age 6 this year. He’s won four of five starts in 2024, including three Group 1 stakes, while racing in five different countries. A deserving favorite to pick up another Longines Turf win.

JOCKEY: William Buick; TRAINER: Charlie Appleby

12. Gold Phoenix (15-1): Arguably the best California-based long-distance turf horse currently in training, he’s 2-for-5 this year at age 6, both of them Grade 2 stakes victories. Never fired against Cabo Spirit in the John Henry Turf Championship last out and will need a strong pace to match his finish in last year’s Longines Turf, where he finished fourth at 50.60-1 odds.

JOCKEY: Kyle Frey; TRAINER: Phil D’Amato

13: There Goes Harvard (30-1): Has switched between dirt and turf racing throughout his career and his only stakes win was on the former surface, all the way back in the May 2022 Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes. Most recently, he rallied to finish second by a length to front-running upset winner Cabo Spirit in the John Henry Turf Championship, an effort that makes him a huge longshot in this race.

JOCKEY: John Velazquez; TRAINER: Michael McCarthy

THE PICK: Rebel’s Romance
