
Equibase Earnings Leaders: Thorpedo Anna’s Impressive Return Vaults Her Into Top 15
March 1 showcased an exciting lineup of top-tier races across North America, bringing major shifts to the 2025 Equibase earnings leaderboard for Thoroughbred racing in North America. Santa Anita Park featured four graded stakes, including two Grade 1 races and a Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve prep. Gulfstream Park hosted an impressive eight graded stakes, highlighted by Kentucky Derby and Longines Kentucky Oaks preps, while Aqueduct added to the action with two graded stakes along with Derby and Oaks qualifiers.
Among the stellar performances, Locked moved into third in the overall earnings standings among North American racehorses with $726,000 after dominating the Santa Anita Handicap Presented by Yamaava’ Resort & Casino trainer Todd Pletcher. Locked has been dialed in since coming off a nearly yearlong layoff this past October. He has won three of his last four starts including wins in the Cigar Mile Handicap last December and the ‘Big Cap’ as well as a second-place finish in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes in January.
In the 3-year-old division, Journalism shined bright in his seasonal debut Saturday at Santa Anita, winning the DK Horse San Felipe Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths over favored Bob Baffert trainee Barnes. Journalism, trained by red-hot Michael McCarthy, is now tied for 21st on the leaderboard by earnings and has moved into seventh in the 3-year-old division with $180,000 in earnings this year. At Gulfstream Park, Sovereignty also made a stellar 3-year-old bow, surging from last to first to capture the Coolmore Fountain of Youth Stakes by a neck over River Thames. The Godolphin homebred trained by Bill Mott soared to 13th overall in the standings and seventh in the 3-year-old division, with $245,520 in earnings.
At Aqueduct in the Gotham Stakes, Flood Zone delivered a fantastic performance, romping by 3 ¼ lengths at odds of 17.80-1 for trainer Brad Cox. Flood Zone is undefeated from two starts this year, and he is now ranked 12th in the 3-year-old division and 19th in the overall standings with $195,000 in earnings.
Irad Ortiz Jr. continues to lead all jockeys across North America by number of wins with 57 and earnings with $5,122,343. Ortiz Jr. picked up nine more wins and $773,745 in earnings last week. The best win rate in the saddle, however, came from Manny Franco who finished first at a tremendous 46%. Franco had 13 wins from 28 starts and rode 75% in the money with $599,830 in earnings. He moved up one spot into third in the overall earnings standings following Ortiz Jr. in first and Tyler Gaffalione in second
