Stars of Yesterday: Looking Back at Best Tampa Bay Derby Winners
The chase for the Longines Kentucky Oaks enters a new phase Saturday with the Fasig-Tipton Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds. Instead of a maximum of 20 qualifying points, the Rachel Alexandra offers a maximum of 50 qualifying points, which could wrap up a spot in the Oaks for the winner.
1. Anonima (6-1 morning-line odds): Has won her last two starts, including an allowance win on this track. Seems to be on an upswing and has the rail and Irad Ortiz Jr. in the saddle. Could be a key threat.
JOCKEY: Irad Ortiz Jr.; TRAINER: Ken McPeek
2. Good Cheer (6-5): Starts her 3-year-old season undefeated in four starts and won the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes to end the year. Looks like the one to beat.
JOCKEY: Luis Saez; TRAINER: Brad Cox
3. Ballerina d’Oro (7-2): Stone-cold closer rallied from last of 10 to finish second in the Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes in her first try on dirt. Should be a serious threat in the final furlong.
JOCKEY: Flavien Prat; TRAINER: Chad Brown
4. Gowells Delight (12-1): Comes off a 14 ½-length loss in the Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Should be part of the early pace but faces a tough challenge here.
JOCKEY: Brian J. Hernandez Jr.; TRAINER: Ken McPeek
5. Aledean (15-1): Comes off two straight wins. Won an allowance race to start 2025, though that was in the slop in an off-the-turf race. Deserves some attention.
JOCKEY: Edgar Morales; TRAINER: Tom Amoss
6. Simply Joking (4-1): Has only run in stakes and is 2-for-2. Won the Fasig-Tipton Silverbulletday Stakes on this track in the slop. Could be tough to catch if she slows down the pace enough.
JOCKEY: Jaime Torres; TRAINER: Whit Beckman
7. Bless the Broken (12-1): Rallied for second in the Silverbulletday, losing by 2 ½ lengths at 16.70-1 odds. Was seventh in the Demoiselle before that. A return to her top effort will make her a threat here.
JOCKEY: Axel Concepcion; TRAINER: William Walden
THE PICK: Good Cheer
LIVE LONGSHOT: Aledean
