There was significant movement within the top 10 in the racehorse category on the Equibase North American purse earnings leaderboard last week courtesy of two $1 million, Grade 1 races at Parx Racing: the Pennsylvania Derby and the Cotillion Stakes.

Seize the Grey returned to the winner’s circle Saturday with a victory in the Pennsylvania Derby by 3 ¾ lengths under Jaime Torres while earning a career-best 109 Equibase Speed Figure for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. With his win on Saturday, the 3-yerar-old Arrogate colt moved up four spots into third place in the 2024 standings by purse earnings.

Seize the Grey has four wins and one third from eight starts in 2024 with $2,314,800 in earnings. After his win in the Preakness Stakes on a muddy track at Pimlico Race Course, Seize the Grey had two disappointing results, finishing seventh by 12 ¾ lengths in the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga June 8 and fourth by 12 lengths in the Jim Dandy Stakes presented by Mohegan Sun July 27 at Saratoga. Sent off as the 4.30-1 third choice, Seize the Grey was able to coast around the Parx main track, leading almost every step of the way, to give Torres his third career graded stakes win, all aboard Seize the Grey.

Thorpedo Anna also returned to the winner’s circle on Saturday after her victory in the Cotillion Stakes for trainer Ken McPeek with Brian Hernandez Jr. aboard. After running second by a head to Fierceness in the DraftKings Travers Stakes in an unforgettable stretch run, she came back to win the Cotillion by a neck.

With Thorpedo Anna’s win on Saturday, the “Grizzly” rose three spots into second in the 2024 North American racehorse standings by purse earnings, with five wins and one second-place finish from six starts in 2024 and $2,626,550 in earnings, Each of her five victories has come in a graded stakes race, four of which were Grade 1 and the other a Grade 2.  She is second in earnings in the standings behind stablemate Mystik Dan, the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve  winner who has $4,070,050 in earnings in 2024.
