2025 Kentucky Derby Trail: Three Heating Up, Three Cooling Down for March 18
Subsanador put on an impressive performance last Saturday, winning the inaugural $1 million California Crown Stakes Presented by SirDavis American Whisky at Santa Anita Park by a head over the Bob Baffert-trained duo of National Treasure and Newgate. The Argentine-bred therefore earned an automatic entry in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic Nov. 2 at Del Mar.
After his second consecutive graded stakes victory, Subsanador cracked the top 100 in the 2024 Equibase Standings and surged up the leaderboard into 37th place (earnings through Oct. 1). The 5-year-old trained by Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella now has $842,000 in 2024 earnings from two wins and one second in four starts. In a thrilling three-horse photo finish, Subsanador was able to edge out National Treasure and Newgate. He earned a 123 Equibase Speed Figure, the highest earned Equibase Speed Figure across North America last week. This was Subsanador’s second race in a row in which he earned an Equibase Speed Figure over 120. After his second-place finish in the California Crown, National Treasure remained third on the earnings list behind Mystik Dan and Thorpedo Anna; however, he is ranked first in the older horse division.
Under a strong hand ride by Joel Rosario, Far Bridge was able to capture his second consecutive Grade 1 victory Saturday, winning the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes at Belmont at the Big A. As the third betting choice in a small but quality field, Far Bridge held off a charging War Like Goddess, the 7-year-old fan favorite racemare who was vying for a three-peat in the Turf Classic. A son of turf champion English Channel, Far Bridge moved up 32 spots into 34th place in the Equibase Standings and is ranked 15th in the turf division with $855,800 in earnings.
Flavien Prat had a fantastic week of riding, posting nine wins from 30 starts – including four stakes wins – and accumulating $932,158 in earnings. He remains second behind Irad Ortiz Jr. in the Equibase Standings for jockeys with 73 fewer wins and $1,411,129 less earnings; however, he is first in the graded stakes division by wins and earnings and first in the dirt/all-weather division by earnings. Ortiz Jr., Prat, and third-ranked Tyler Gaffalione all have accumulated more than $22 million in earnings, followed by Jose Ortiz in fourth place with $18,858,209 in earnings.
Steve Asmussen has remained on top of the trainer Equibase Standings for the third week in a row, followed by Chad Brown and Brad Cox who are battling for second in a tight earnings race. Brown ranks second in earnings with $1,009,178 million more than Cox; however, the race is much tighter based on 2024 wins, with Cox edging Brown by a lone victory, 176 to 175. Cox had 10 wins last week (winning at a 48% clip and a 76% in-the-money mark) with $1,116,986 in earnings, while Brown had five wins and $485,525 in earnings.
Other notable changes in the 2024 standings for horses include Ways and Means, who romped by four lengths in the Gallant Bloom Stakes at Belmont at the Big A with Prat in the irons and moved up 21 spots to 72nd place on the Equibase Standings list. The Gallant Bloom was Ways and Means’ second consecutive graded stakes win and the Klaravich Stables homebred has $589,520 in earnings this year.
Tapit Trice gave Dylan Davis and Todd Pletcher their first graded stakes win together last Saturday in the Woodward Stakes on a muddy sealed track at Belmont at the Big A. After prevailing against favored Skippylongstocking, Tapit Trice is now in the top 100, ranked 87th in the Equibase Standings. He has $520,000 in earnings this year from two wins out of three starts, all in graded stakes races.
