An abundance of top-tier racing last weekend across North America caused dramatic changes in the 2024 standings in numerous categories.

There were 15 North American Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series races last weekend, and we are now less than a month away from the two-day Breeders’ Cup World Championships Nov. 1-2 at Del Mar. Among the Breeders’ Cup prep races were highly competitive 2-year-old graded stakes races, which led to the rise of several up-and-coming stars beginning to shine.

One of the biggest movers up the Equibase leaderboard was an established star. Champion Idiomatic, in seemingly effortless fashion, won the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes at Keeneland for the second consecutive year. She earned a career-best 111 Equibase Speed Figure winning by a 6 ½-length margin under Florent Geroux for the Brad Cox stable. Idiomatic, a 5-year-old mare by Curlin, moved up nine spots to 10th in purse earnings and has an automatic spot in the $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff Nov. 2 at Del Mar. Idiomatic has $1,487,350 in earnings this year with three wins from five starts, including two Grade 1 wins. She capped her 4-year-old season with a half-length win in the Distaff and was named champion older dirt female.

There is a new leader in the 2-year-old standings, May Day Ready surpassed Tiztastic by $101,725 in purse earnings. May Day Ready continued an undefeated season Oct. 4 at Keeneland by winning the Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes Presented by Keeneland Sales in a dramatic stretch run under Frankie Dettori. She is a perfect 3-for-3 with $844,025 in earnings and cemented a spot in the $1 million John Deere Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Chancer McPatrick is another impressive juvenile who remained undefeated this weekend, winning the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at the Belmont at the Big A meet by 2 ¾ lengths in last-to-first fashion for trainer Chad Brown. After his second Grade 1 win in a row, the McKinzie colt has moved up 12 spots into sixth in the 2-year-old division with $495,000 in purse earnings this year. Chancer McPatrick has now won two Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” races for the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile presented by TAA, taking the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga despite a troubled trip in addition to the Champagne Stakes.

Carl Spackler posted the top Equibase Speed Figure across North America last week, earning a 117 for winning the Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes Oct. 5 at Keeneland by a length to give the aforementioned Brown his first ever Turf Mile win. Four-year-old Carl Spackler shot up 59 spots in the standings and now ranks 21 with $1,136,225 in earnings this year from four wins in five starts. The turf Mile was his second Grade 1 win in a row after dominating in the FanDuel Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga Aug. 11 and his third graded stakes victory this year. He earned an automatic entry into the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Presented by PDJF with his win in the Turf Mile.

Irad Ortiz Jr. and Flavien Prat remain in first and second, respectively, in the jockey standings by purse earnings, however with $1,442,519 in earnings last week, Tyler Gaffalione is just $2,548,163 behind Prat. Gaffalione had back-to-back Grade 1 one wins at Keeneland on Saturday in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity aboard East Avenue and the Turf Mile on Carl Spackler.

Brown had an impressive weekend at Keeneland and Belmont at the Big A. He won the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes Presented by UK HealthCare for the seventh consecutive year while finishing first, second and third. Brown also won the Turf Mile Stakes, Champagne Stakes, and Grade 2 Beldame Stakes. Brown finished the week with $2,050,931 in earnings; he remains second to Steve Asmussen with roughly $200,000 separating the top two.
