Of the three Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series races last weekend at Woodbine, trainer Mark Casse won two of them: the Grade 1 Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes with And One More Time and the Grade 1 Rogers Woodbine Mile Stakes with Win for the Money. Casse also swept first, second, and third in the Natalma while earning his eighth career victory in the race.

In addition to Casse’s win with Win for the Money in the Woodbine Mile, he also finished second with Filo Di Arianna. On the same day, almost 600 miles south in Louisville, Ky., Casse won the Grade 3 Pocahontas Stakes with La Cara, who earned 10 points at Churchill Downs in the first “Road to the Longines Kentucky Oaks” race.

The Hall of Fame trainer had a total of seven wins, four seconds, and seven thirds from 52 starts last week with earnings of $1,522,474, which has propelled him into fifth in the 2024 trainer standings by purse earnings, passing Saffie Joseph Jr., who is now ranked sixth on the Equibase Leaderboard.

The top four trainers by purse earnings remained unchanged with Steve Asmussen leading all trainers by nearly $2 million, followed by Chad Brown, Brad Cox, and Todd Pletcher.

Post Time gave a brilliant performance on Saturday at Laurel Park, winning the Polynesian Stakes by 11 ½ lengths while earning a 103 Equibase Speed Figure. Post Time, who is trainer Brittany Russell’s richest horse of all-time, has enjoyed a perfect in-the-trifecta year so far with four wins (all stakes races), two seconds, and one third while accumulating $745,000 in earnings in seven starts. Post Time moved up seven spots to 39th in the 2024 standings. His only losses this year were seconds in the Grade 1 Hill ‘n’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap and Grade 3 Westchester Stakes and a third in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes.

Other notable performances and changes in the 2024 standings include Zeitlos, who earned her fifth victory in 2024 with a win in the Open Mind Stakes. Zeitlos cracked the top 100 in standings after her win on Saturday and currently is ranked 68th with $565,782 in purse earnings.

Jonathan’s Way is undefeated in two starts after his win in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes Saturday at Churchill Downs, earning 10 points in the first “Road to the Kentucky Derby” race. The Ohio-bred became the first graded stakes winner for red-hot, first-crop sire Vekoma.

Irad Ortiz Jr. widened his lead over Flavien Prat this past week in the 2024 jockey standings and continues to dominate by wins with 236. Ortiz Jr. now has a $1,526,313 lead in purse earnings over Prat.

The star of the North American jockey colony last week was Tyler Gaffalione, who rode eight winners — one at Kentucky Downs and seven at Churchill Downs —  with $1,056,344 in purse earnings. Gaffalione ranks third in the 2024 standings with $21,420,847 in earnings.
