Irad Ortiz Jr. extended his comfortable lead in wins during 2024 among North American jockeys with a dominant week as he broke the 300 mark. The five-time Eclipse Award champion rider has now won 309 races total for the year and also ranks second in purse earnings in the Equibase standings behind Flavien Prat.

Last Saturday at Gulfstream Park, Ortiz had a five-win day, including a stakes double in the Tropical Park Oaks aboard See You Around and the Tropical Park Derby with Cugino. Last week, Ortiz Jr. had 13 wins (a 36% clip), earning $465,180, and he currently leads all jockeys during the Gulfstream Park Championship Meet with 22 wins.

Among notable stakes winners of the week, Sacrosanct and Stone Smuggler – each progeny of first-year stallion Honest Mischief – each took a division of the New York Stallion Series Stakes on Saturday at Aqueduct.

Sacrosanct surged up the Equibase earnings leaderboard by 13 spots and is now ranked 13th in the 2-year-old division after his win in the New York Stallion Series Stakes (Great White Way Division) for trainer Brad Cox with Manny Franco in the irons. After breaking his maiden by 3 ¼ lengths in a maiden special weight at Saratoga back in August, Sacrosanct has gone on to win three black-type stakes races in a row on the Aqueduct dirt; the Bertram F. Bongard Stakes, the Sleepy Hollow Stakes and most recently the New York Stallion Series Stakes. He has earned $503,250 since being purchased as a 2-year-old in training in May for $260,000.

Stone Smuggler earned her second black-type win in the New York Stallion Series Stakes (Fifth Avenue Division) under Jose Lezcano for trainer Jorge Abreu. The bay filly cracked the top 100 on Equibase’s list and is now ranked 19th in the 2-year-old division. Stone Smuggler is a perfect 100% in-the-money this year from four starts with two wins, a second and a third accumulating $364,347 in earnings.

After stalking a slow pace, Journalism drove clear to win the Los Alamitos Futurity by 3 ½ lengths over Bob Baffert’s Getaway Car and 1-2 favorite Gaming. Journalism, a $825,000 yearling purchase, is trained by red-hot Michael McCarthy, who is winning at a 57% clip in the last month in stakes races. The 2-year-old son of Curlin earned 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby prep leaderboard.

In an exciting finish, Coal Battle made a strong late surge to capture the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes by half a length, defeating favored Speed King Friday night at Remington Park. Remaining undefeated on dirt after three starts, Coal Battle secured his second consecutive black-type stakes victory, also earning 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Trained by Lonnie Briley, Coal Battle has climbed the Equibase standings and now ranks 26th in the 2-year-old division with $307,625 in earnings. Coal Battle, a son of Coal Front, was purchased as a yearling for $70,000.
