Power Rankings: Owen Almighty Enters Derby Top 10 after Tampa Tour de Force
The FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by PDJF is one of those races that underscores why the event is called the World Championships. A strong international field once again has assembled for the one-mile turf test in which foreign runners have been victorious in the last four editions and five of the last six.
1. Ramatuelle (5-1 morning-line odds): The 3-year-old filly should be a major force after winning one of Europe’s premier turf sprints, the seven-furlong Group 1 Prix de la Foret, where she beat older males. Her form before that was solid with a pair of thirds in Group 1 stakes. If she breaks cleanly from the rail, she could have a big say in the outcome.
JOCKEY: Aurelien Lemaitre; TRAINER: Christopher Head
2. Chili Flag (20-1): Five-year-old mare won the Grade 1 Just a Game Stakes earlier this year at a mile at Saratoga and last time out closed nicely from 11th to finish second in the one-mile First Lady Stakes Presented by UK HealthCare for trainer Chad Brown. Though she has never faced males before in the United States, the lone American winner of this race in the last six years was a mare, Uni, who was also trained by Brown.

3. Geoglyph (8-1): A 5-year-old from Japan, he is coming off a career-best effort when second in the Grade 2 Sapporo Kinen. That race was at 1 ¼ miles and he may need more ground to fire his best shot.
JOCKEY: Takeshi Yokoyama; TRAINER: Tetsuya Kimura
4. Diego Velazquez (8-1): A European 3-year-old owned by the Coolmore partners and trained by Europe’s top trainer, Aidan O’Brien. He’s coming off a pair of group stakes wins, capped by a score in the Group 2 Soloway Stakes. He gets O’Brien’s top rider, Ryan Moore, so he must be well-meant.
JOCKEY: Ryan Moore; TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien
5. Goliad (30-1): Should be on or near the lead. Won the Mint Millions Stakes at Kentucky Downs last time out and could be dangerous if he gets away with a slow pace.
JOCKEY: Flavien Prat; TRAINER: Richard Mandella
6. Notable Speech (7-2): Multiple Group 1 winner in Europe this year coming off a third in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. Won the Group 1 Sussex Stakes before that. His form shows a good race followed by a bad one, and it’s time for a good performance.
JOCKEY: William Buick; TRAINER: Charles Appleby
7. Porta Fortuna (4-1): A 3-year-old European-based filly with some American owners, she looms a force here off a string of three straight Group 1 wins. It started with the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and was capped by a win in the Group 1 Matron Stakes. She cannot be ignored here.
JOCKEY: Tom Marquand; TRAINER: Donnacha O’Brien
8. More Than Looks (20-1): One of America’s top turf milers, despite running second in both of his 2024 starts in the Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile and the Grade 1 FanDuel Fourstardave Handicap. Has a strong late kick and rallied from 13th to sixth to lose by just two lengths in last year’s FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile presented by PDJF. Very interesting possibility, especially at the odds. He was second to Carl Spackler in both starts this year, and that multiple Grade 1 winner is 6-1 while he’s 20-1.
JOCKEY: Jose Ortiz; TRAINER: Cherie DeVaux
9. Johannes (9-2): The best of the west, he has won all four of his starts this season, each of them a graded stakes in California. Has home field advantage but faces much tougher competition.
JOCKEY: Umberto Rispoli; TRAINER: Tim Yakteen
10. Win for the Money (30-1): Canadian-based gelding exits a fast win in the Grade 1 Rogers Woodbine Mile Stakes. Might bounce off that effort but his best try will make him a contender.
JOCKEY: Patrick Husbands; TRAINER: Mark Casse
11. Ten Happy Rose (30-1): Six-year-old Japanese mare won the Group 1 Victoria Mile in May at gargantuan 207-1 odds then was given four months off and returned with a seventh in the six-furlong Group 2 Sankei Sho Centaur. Looks like she might be a one-hit wonder.
JOCKEY: Akihide Tsumura; TRAINER: Daisuke Takayanagi
12. Carl Spackler (6-1): Named for the iconic “Caddyshack” character, this American hopeful has peaked at the right time. He won the Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile and the Grade 1 FanDuel Fourstardave Handicap in his last two starts and looks highly formidable here. Only drawback is the outside post in a big field.
