Preakness Quick Sheet: Get to Know the 2021 Preakness Horses
2023 United Nations Stakes at a Glance
RacingThis Saturday is the marquee day of racing for the summer meet at Monmouth Park with six stakes races highlighted by the 56th edition of the $1 million TVG.com Haskell Stakes and a national telecast on NBC from 5-6 p.m. ET.
In addition to the Haskell, there are five graded stakes races on a terrific undercard. Chief among those races is the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes, one of the most important turf races of the year and a key steppingstone on the road to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf in November at Santa Anita Park.
1. Therapist (6-1 morning-line odds): He has been a fixture in the turf male division for years. He went off form for a stretch in 2022, but has gotten back on track this year with two wins, one second, and one third in five starts with a Grade 2 win in April. A win threat at his best.
JOCKEY: Javier Castellano; TRAINER: Mike Maker
2. So High (30-1): Has not won in 12 starts since November 2020 but could be a pace presence and hang on late for a minor share at what figures to be an appealing price. That said, prefer other longshots as he tends to run out of gas in deep stretch.
JOCKEY: Romero Maragh; TRAINER: Naipaul Chatterpaul
3. Catnip (4-1): If you are looking for a contender on the rise, Catnip fits the bill with three wins in as many starts as a 4-year-old in 2023. He’s also 2-for-2 on the Monmouth turf and enters off an impressive victory from off the pace here in the Grade 3 Monmouth Stakes June 17. This is a step up in class, but he looks ready for it.
JOCKEY: Joel Rosario; TRAINER: Mike Stidham
4. Oceans Map (30-1): Winless in his last 11 starts but does own a second during the drought in the 1 ½-mile Presious Passion Stakes on this turf course last fall. He should be a big price and has run well on the turf at Monmouth over the last few years while posting his best speed figures on this turf course.
JOCKEY: Isaac Castillo; TRAINER: Gregory Sacco
5. Limited Liability (5-1): Limited Liability has shown nice improvement with a win and a second most recently in the Grade 2 Louisville Stakes in his two starts as a 4-year-old. Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey is patient with his horses and that appears to be paying dividends with Limited Liability, who posted the best speed figure of his career when stretching out to 1 ½ miles in the Louisville. Another contender on the rise.
JOCKEY: John Velazquez; TRAINER: Shug McGaughey
6. Planetario (3-1): A Group 1 winner in his native Brazil, Planetario joined the barn of Hall of Famer Richard Mandella last year and has improved in each of his three starts, most recently winning the Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes at 1 ¾ miles by 4 ½ lengths. If he runs a similar race in the United Nations, Planetario will be tough to beat.
JOCKEY: Mike Smith; TRAINER: Richard Mandella
7. Yamato (15-1): Respect the trainer-jockey tandem for this 6-year-old gelding coming out of a decent fourth in the Louisville Stakes, a race won by fellow United Nations contender Foreign Relations with the aforementioned Limited Liability running second. He almost always finishes well and should be a nice price but this is a tough assignment.
JOCKEY: Luis Saez; TRAINER: Mike Maker
8. Foreign Relations (8-1): Followed up a breakthrough win in the Grade 3 Louisville with a head-scratching sixth as the odds-on favorite in a stakes race at Ellis Park. He’s a bit of a roll of the dice here with a shot to be a major player at his best.
JOCKEY: Declan Cannon; TRAINER: Conor Murphy
9. Red Knight (5-2): Gallant 9-year-old just keeps on truckin’ with two graded stakes wins and one second in four races this year, highlighted by a 1 ½-length victory in the Grade 1 Man o’ War Stakes at this 1 3/8-mile distance two starts back in May at Belmont Park. The big concern for this deep closer in the United Nations is pace with almost no speed entered in the race.
JOCKEY: Tyler Gaffalione; TRAINER: Mike Maker
10. Kygo (20-1): In eight starts since coming to the U.S. in 2021, he has only one victory to his credit in a claiming race in May 2022. He was unplaced in his two tries against stakes competition and looks overmatched against this group.
JOCKEY: Paco Lopez; TRAINER: Elizabeth Dobles
