2023 Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes at a Glance
RacingFor all of the money up for grabs at the lucrative Kentucky Downs meet, something else besides $1.7 million in purse money will be on the line Saturday in the FanDuel Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes. A guaranteed, fees-paid spot in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf will be awarded to the winner among a highly competitive field of 16 that includes four also-eligibles hoping to get a chance to run.
1. Foreign Relations (12-1): Disappointed in his last two starts, though he gets Johnny V. and the rail here. Seems to be facing a tough uphill climb.
JOCKEY: John Velazquez; TRAINER: Conor Murphy
2. Red Knight (4-1): He won this race last year and is coming off a third in the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes. The 9-year-old gelding looks like the one to beat.
JOCKEY: Tyler Gaffalione; TRAINER: Mike Maker
3. Verstappen (9-2): Was second to hard-knocking 9-year-old Channel Maker in the Bowling Green Stakes while chasing a slow pace. Should work out a better trip here.
JOCKEY: Declan Cannon; TRAINER: Brendan Walsh
4. Santin (5-1): Was a solid second in the Arlington Million Stakes and should handle the added distance here. Figures to have a big say in the outcome.
JOCKEY: Florent Geroux; TRAINER: Brendan Walsh
5. Get Smokin (15-1): Was second in his last two tries in graded stakes company. Has a sharp turn of speed and could prove tough to catch if he can control the pace and carve out slow fractions.
JOCKEY: Fernando De La Cruz; TRAINER: Mark Casse
6. Me and Mr. C. (10-1): Won a mile and a quarter prep for this race at Ellis Park and owns a three-race winning streak. Has put in some sharp workouts lately and cannot be ignored in this field.
JOCKEY: Gerardo Corrales; TRAINER: Mike Maker
7. Kitodan (12-1): Showed little in his last two starts after an 11-month layoff. Will need major improvement to be a factor here, which could happen with a switch to jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.
JOCKEY: Irad Ortiz Jr.; TRAINER: Eric Foster
8. Never Explain (8-1): Was a troubled fourth in the Arlington Million. Before that, he was third in the Bowling Green Stakes and second in the Grade 3 Monmouth Stakes. With a clean trip, he can make his presence felt.
JOCKEY: Joel Rosario; TRAINER: Shug McGaughey
9. Nautilus (30-1): Was well-beaten in last year’s Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf, his lone start in a graded turf stakes. Seems overmatched here.
JOCKEY: Joe Talamo; TRAINER: Paulo Lobo
10. Another Mystery (30-1): Was third in last year’s race, losing by a neck. Now 7, he hasn’t raced since the May 20 Louisville Stakes when he was ninth. May be a little rusty after the layoff.
JOCKEY: Brian J. Hernandez Jr.; TRAINER: Chris Block
11. Therapist (7-2): Has blossomed into a distance tiger since being claimed by Mike Maker for owner Michael Dubb in January. He won the Grade 1 United Nations last time out. Has not raced since that July 22 test but is working smartly. The post position seems the main drawback.
JOCKEY: Javier Castellano; TRAINER: Mike Maker
12. Spooky Channel (20-1): Showed little last time against Me and Mr. C. and wasn’t helped by drawing the outside post. We’ll pass.
JOCKEY: James Graham; TRAINER: Jason Barkley
13. Sy Dog (20-1, AE): He’s on the also-eligible list and will need a scratch in order to run. Was second in a 1 5/8-mile stakes at Saratoga so distance will not be an issue.
JOCKEY: Jareth Loveberry; TRAINER: Graham Motion
14. Cellist (10-1, AE): Finished a good second to Me and Mr. C. in the Ellis Park prep. Coud be a contender if he draws into the race with two defections.
JOCKEY: Martin Garcia; TRAINER: Rusty Arnold
15. Highest Honors (8-1, AE): Hails from a top-notch barn but comes off a pair of uninspiring sixth-place finishes in graded stakes company.
JOCKEY: Irad Ortiz Jr.; TRAINER: Chad Brown
16. Red Run (20-1, AE): Seems best-suited to dirt with just one win in six turf starts.
JOCKEY: Vincent Cheminaud; TRAINER: Mike Maker
THE PICK: Red Knight
LIVE LONGSHOT: Santin
