Inside Thoroughbred Sales: What is a Bloodstock Agent?

09.15.2023

America’s Best Racing’s Rachel Miller visited the Keeneland September yearling sale and offers some insights on what goes on behind the scenes and how the Thoroughbred racehorse auction marketplace operates.

In this video, she explains the role of bloodstock agents. While the name itself invokes some spooky imagery, bloodstock agents essentially operate like racehorse realtors with clients looking to buy a racehorse within a specific budget. Thoroughbreds are like humans in that they all have different strengths based on their physical build, pedigree, and mind, and bloodstock agents try to find buyers the type of racehorse that they are seeking to purchase.

In 2022, the Keeneland September sale featured 1,321 different buyers representing 25 different countries who spent more than $405 million on Thoroughbred yearlings. Simply put, Keeneland’s September yearling sale is the global marketplace for Thoroughbred yearlings and the world’s most important Thoroughbred sale and the bloodstock agents are the ones who select the vast majority of the racehorse prospects for their clients.
