The Kentucky Derby is iconic among America’s signature sporting events. Along the lines of the Super Bowl and the World Series, being at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May is not just a day at the races: it is an experience, a chance to participate in one of the country’s great cultural touchstones within the confines of a historic racetrack.

To plan and prepare for this bucket-list event, though, might seem overwhelming to someone who has never done it. The tickets, the hotels, the schedule, the wardrobe, all of it can feel like an ever-growing list of things to do and moments to plan for. If you are aspiring to join the crowds at Churchill Downs on Derby day, here are a few tips for some rosy veterans to help you plan for this extra-special day.

Getting There

Plan ahead for tickets, hotels, and flights. Tickets generally go on sale around November, about six months before the Derby. To get the seats you want, buy early so that you have more choices. The same goes for hotels and flights. Because both can increase in price as Derby day approaches, book as early as you can. Louisville area hotels go fast.

If possible, consider staying in an outlying area, like Elizabethtown, Lexington, Shelbyville, and other locations. You will have to drive into Louisville, but you might have an easier time finding places to stay within your budget. Additionally, you may not have to fight crowds to find places to eat or things to do.

If staying in a homeshare, find a shuttle service or rideshare service that can take you from your accommodations to the track. To alleviate the stressors of driving into the area and finding parking, hiring transportation takes that off your plate and may be a lifesaver if your day at the Downs leaves you drained.

Make sure you have a plan for transportation to get in and out of the racetrack. Churchill Downs has shuttles that run to and from the Kentucky Exposition Center. This keeps traffic around the racetrack minimal and saves the headache of trying to get in and out of the area.

Dressing the Part

A comfy pair of shoes is a must. (Eclipse Sportswire)

Don’t overthink the outfit. Early May in Kentucky can be anything from 70s and sunny to 50s and rainy. Walking around in an elaborate outfit in wet weather can make any rose wilt. Check forecasts for the big weekend and consider bringing more than one option in case the weather changes while you are in Louisville. Consider your outfit from top to bottom and what can make the most impact while leaving you comfortable all day.

Go big with the fashion but be practical with the shoes. Both Oaks and Derby day include early post times and late exits. While you might be tempted to go for the statement footwear, remember that you will be walking around the racetrack and up and down stairs quite a bit over your time at Churchill Downs. Go for comfort rather than style. Your feet will thank you for it.

Carry a second pair of shoes. Check the bag policy for the big weekend and consider throwing in another pair of shoes just in case the long day leaves your dogs barking. Fashion is important, but comfort is the smartest state of mind when it comes to the run for the roses.

Enjoying the Day

Prepare for bad cell service and for a dead battery. Bring a charger pack as finding an outlet to charge your phone will be a challenge. Don’t forget the cord too!

Carry a bag in your purse for souvenirs. Fold up a smaller bag and carry it in your purse so that you have something to keep any souvenirs that you might pick up safe and clean while you enjoy your day at the races.

Stay with the people you came with or have a meeting spot for the times when you’ve had too much to drink. With more than 100,000 people crowding the historic racetrack, finding your group can be a challenge. If you can agree upon a specific time and place to meet, that can cut down on the stress of being separated from your companions, especially if you or one of your friends has partied too much.

Take advantage of the clear bags and bring things you might need: sunscreen, an extra pair of shoes, band-aids, pain relievers, etc. Shop the travel size section at your favorite drugstore and pick up small packs of sunscreen or other necessities just in case. Head off that headache at the pass with a wee bottle of pain relievers.

Come prepared to have a good time. Above all, the first Friday and Saturday in May are about enjoying the sights, sounds, and traditions of these famed races. Plan ahead to minimize your stress and maximize your joy at Churchill Downs.
