With less than three months remaining until the first Friday and Saturday in May at Churchill Downs, prep races for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve are in full swing. Among the standouts from last weekend, Citizen Bull, the Eclipse Award winner as champion 2-year-old colt of 2024, dominated in his 3-year-old debut, winning the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park by 3 ¾ lengths Feb. 1 while earning a career-best 107 Equibase Speed Figure for trainer Bob Baffert. The son of Into Mischief as a result is ranked 18th in the Equibase earnings standings for North American racehorses with $120,000 in earnings, and he’s ranked eighth in the 3-year-old division.

The two other Derby prep winners on Feb. 1, Burnham Road (Holy Bull Stakes) and Captain Cook (Withers Stakes), also entered the top Equibase rankings, with the former 12th overall and fourth in the 3-year-old division ($151,900) and the latter 15th overall and seventh among 3-year-olds ($137,500).

The top Equibase Speed Figure of the week was 120, earned by El Potente in the Grade 3 Thunder Road Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 1. El Potente’s 120 is the top speed figure earned on turf thus far this year. The overall top Equibase Speed Figure this year is 122, earned by Tapit Shoes on Jan. 24 on the all-weather track at Turfway Park.

Chad Brown, the 2024 Eclipse Award winner as outstanding trainer, surpassed $1 million in earnings this past week and moved up one spot into seventh in the trainer earnings standings in North America. Brown won at an outstanding 70% clip and 90% in the money last week with earnings of $298,670 from seven wins, including a graded stakes double on Feb. 1 at Tampa Bay Downs. Brown won the Endeavour Stakes with Saffron Moon and the Tampa Bay Stakes with Running Bee. He had four wins from five runners last Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, bringing his career win percentage at the track to 33% with 98 wins from 301 career starts.

Irad Ortiz Jr. and Tyler Gaffalione remain in first and second respectively in the North American jockey earnings standings; however, Luis Saez had a very lucrative week of riding and moved up four spots into third on the leaderboard. Saez had 10 wins last week, winning at a 34% clip and riding 62% in the money with $565,945 in earnings. Four of his trips to the winner’s circle came on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, where he notably won the Kitten’s Joy Stakes aboard Charlie’s to Blame and the Fasig-Tipton Forward Gal Stakes on Eclatant, and also finished second in the Holy Bull Stakes aboard Tappan Street.
