Preakness Quick Sheet: Get to Know the 2021 Preakness Horses
As 3-year-olds are running out of chances to race against horses their own age in a graded stakes, the Lexus Raven Run Stakes Oct. 19 will give 10 sophomore filly sprinters the chance to add Grade 2 laurels to their resume.
The Keeneland stakes is run at the same seven-furlong distance as the PNC Bank Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, but the Raven Run is unlikely to send anyone to the World Championships two weeks later at Del Mar.
1. Fibber (10-1 morning-line odds): An interesting possibility off a second in the Grade 3 Fasig-Tipton Dogwood Stakes and two wins before that. Should be well-suited to the seven-furlong distance.
JOCKEY: Rafael Bejarano; TRAINER: Chris Hartman
2. Miuccia (8-1): Was hurt by a wide trip while closing for third in the six-furlong Prioress Stakes. Fits in nicely with this group
JOCKEY: Irad Ortiz Jr.; TRAINER: Gustavo Delgado
3. My Mane Squeeze (4-1): Appears to be rounding into top form after winning the Grade 2 Eight Belles Stakes Presented by Sysco in early May. Won the Dogwood Stakes last time and should be a major player.
JOCKEY: Luis Saez; TRAINER: Mike Maker
4. Twirling Queen (10-1): Has been thriving on turf but has not won on dirt since her career debut in June 2023 with three subsequent off-the-board finishes on dirt main tracks.
JOCKEY: Francisco Arrieta; TRAINER: Jose D’Angelo
5. Emery (7-5): The probable favorite off a second in the Grade 1 Test Stakes Presented by Ticketmaster at Saratoga. Won the Grade 2 Victory Ride Stakes before that and rates as the one to beat.
JOCKEY: Tyler Gaffalione; TRAINER: Brad Cox
6. V V’s Dream (8-1): Has raced in solid fashion in longer graded stakes last fall and earlier this year. Had a nice comeback race when she was third after a six-month layoff and seems capable of moving forward off that try.
JOCKEY: Brian Hernandez Jr.; TRAINER: Ken McPeek
7. Mink’s Palace (12-1): Took a nice step forward with a fast allowance victory. Will be tested for class in her first start in a graded stakes.
JOCKEY: Jose Ortiz; TRAINER: Eddie Kenneally
8. Uno Le (30-1): Comes off a maiden win and finds a tough spot to face winners for the first time.
JOCKEY: Gerardo Corrales; TRAINER: Roddina Barrett
9. Riperton (20-1): Turned in a very fast race when second by a head in an allowance last time. Seems a candidate for a bounce off that effort.
JOCKEY: Cristian Torres; TRAINER: Paulo Lobo
10. Haulin Ice (12-1): Flopped in the Grade 2 Charles Town Oaks but can be competitive if she reverts to her previous form at Gulfstream Park, including a 9 1/2-length win in a stakes race.
JOCKEY: Luan Machado; TRAINER: Saffie Joseph Jr.
THE PICK: Emery
