Preakness Quick Sheet: Get to Know the 2021 Preakness Horses
Early in the summer of 2021, Troy Levy, President of Tropical Racing and VP of Game of Silks, and Dan Nissanoff, CEO of Game of Silks, set out to revolutionize the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing and pave the way for an era of new fans. Acknowledging the fact that horse racing fans were aging out of the sport and that the industry needed to engage new and younger fans, Levy and Nissanoff endeavored to increase exposure and virtualize the sport in the same way PokerStars did for the sport of Poker.
Troy Levy, a lifelong horseman, had an intense desire to grow the sport of horse racing. Armed with the idea for Game of Silks, Levy joined forces with Dan Nissanoff, a tech sector entrepreneur with an impressive track record of successful ventures. Together they assembled the team to bring the Game of Silks dream to life.
The goal of Game of Silks is to allow everyday racing enthusiasts (along with key industry players) to participate in the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing as owners. The blockchain makes this possible as an NFT (non-fungible token) is created for every Thoroughbred registered with The Jockey Club. The NFT is essentially a virtual clone of an actual Thoroughbred. However, the purchase price of a Silks horse is a far cry from the cost of an actual Thoroughbred.
Horses are purchased in two ways: through the purchase of a Delivery Pass and within the peer-to-peer marketplace. A Delivery Pass is similar to a pack of baseball cards. Once purchased, a randomly chosen horse from the crop of 2-year-olds is ‘Revealed.’ So realistically, a Delivery Pass could be a future Kentucky Derby or Breeders’ Cup Classic winner for a lucky player. In fact, two weeks ago, a Delivery Pass revealed Muth, an OBS 2-year-old that sold for $2 million. In the peer-to-peer marketplace, horses already ‘Revealed’ can be bought and sold based on performance, pedigree, or any other factor that motivates enterprising Game of Silks owners.
Basically, Game of Silks mirrors the real world of horse racing: when a horse wins in reality, its NFT counterpart also wins. It levels the playing field by allowing everyday fans to compete as owners alongside the likes of the prolific stables and long-established owners/breeders.
“As a lifelong horseman and passionate Thoroughbred owner, I wanted to create a Game that allows others to experience the excitement I feel when my horse runs,” Levy said. “With the pricing and rewards model we created at Game of Silks, now everyday fans can compete and enjoy the sport of racing from the inside of the Winners’ Circle.”–Troy Levy, Co-Founder of Silks
Silks presents a great opportunity to participate as an owner in horse racing at a great price. The cost of a Delivery Pass is $750, and the reward system is structured such that owners earn 1% of real-world payouts. For example, a $100,000 purse for a Thoroughbred in the real world equates to a $1,000 prize in Game of Silks. As the player base grows, the payout percentage will increase, creating even more potential for even greater rewards.
To participate in the game, simply visit the Game of Silks website at Silks.io and purchase a Starter Pack, which includes an Avatar (your stable name/identity) and 1 Delivery Pass for a to-be-revealed Thoroughbred from the 2021 foal crop.
