El pasado fin de semana fue de gala, incluso con clasificación a la Breeders Cup

El hipismo estadounidense, en época de pandemia, se sostiene sobre el firme accionar de sus ejemplares campeones así como  en la entrega de preparadores y criadores, que apuestan al desarrollo continuo de la actividad; por supuesto, con la determinante intervención de los jinetes, entre quienes sobresale la calidad y el arrojo de los latinoamericanos que semana a semana inscriben sus nombres en el tope de los marcadores incluso en las carreras de mayor prestigio donde hasta han impuesto una suerte de hegemonía.

Es así como este pasado fin de semana hubo una gala hípica entre los hipódromos de Churchill Downs y Belmont Park, con carreras selectivas y clasificatorias a los máximos premios como la Breeders Cup.

En el caso del óvalo de Louisville, el Churchill Downs, en primer lugar destacan las actuaciones triunfantes de los pensionados del entrenador Steven Asmussen. Impuso a dos ejemplares de manera contundente.

En el marco del Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) con una bolsa de 100 mil dólares a repartir se escenificó espectacular atropellada que culminó en contundente triunfo, por 4 cuerpos y ¾, para el potrillo castaño Cazadero, ahora invicto en dos actuaciones, con un acumulado de 106.160 dólares.

Este hijo de Street Sense en Wild Gams por Forest Wildcat, nacido en Kentucky, y defensor de los colores del Stud Stonestreet Stable Llc, respondió a las exigencias del rendidor jockey panameño Ricardo Santana Jr. La prueba se dio en violentos parciales de 21.24 - 45.12 - 57.23 lo que favoreció la arremetida del ganador que paró las agujas en 1:09.73 en los 6 furlongs, o lo que es lo mismo 1,200 metros, en superficie de arena.

Luego de ese triunfo en atropellada el panameño Santana Jr aseguró que “el caballo está trabajando súper bien en las mañanas pero lo que más me gusta es que a pesar de sus dos años de potrillo se comporta como un profesional (de experiencia)”.

Explicó que el noble equino se deja enseñar y responde claramente a lo que le plantea su conductor. “Solo pido que Dios me lo mantenga sano para compartir juntos mejores niveles. Creo que este caballo tiene mucho futuro”, sentenció.

La reina sigue ganando

El otro ejemplar victorioso bajo las instrucciones y la preparación del exitoso Steven Asmussen fue la reina del hipismo norteño, Midnight Bisou, que ostenta el Premio Eclipse como Yegua Madura del 2019, y viene de arribar segunda en su más reciente prueba corrida el pasado 29 de febrero, en lo que se considera la carrera que reparte el premio más jugoso en el  mundo (US$ 20.000.000), la Saudi Cup del Hipódromo King Abdulaziz, sobre distancia de 1800 metros, donde tuvo que conformarse con escoltar a Maximun Security.

La destacada hija de Midnight Lute en Diva Delite por Repent, literalmente saltó a la pista de Churchill Downs para pulverizar a las 6 rivales que le salieron al paso en el marco del Fleur de Lis Stakes (G2) con premiación de 200.000 dólares a repartir.

Con la monta del experimentado Mike Smith, la diva del hipismo  aprovechó el gasto de la excelente galopadora Serengeti Empress,  que no aguantó la presión y a partir de la última curva cedió el paso a la vencedora, a su escolta Motion Emotion y a Another Broad, a la postre tercera.

La conducida de Smith, quien se mostró muy impresionado por la condición que ostenta la yegua al punto de catalogarla, a estas alturas, como “un descubrimiento”, se impuso por más de 8 cuerpos con registro de 1:48.99 en distancia de una milla y 1/8 (1,800 metros). Esta corre y lo demás es cuento.

Ahora el ejemplar tiene de 13 primeros, 5 segundos y 3 terceros en 21 salidas a la pista (8 en sus últimas 10 salidas, que incluyen  3 de G1 entre las que destaca el Personal Ensign que ganó en Saratoga en 2019 y que pareciera perfilarse como su próxima prueba pública en la edición 2020 este 1° de agosto).

Posteriormente, debido a la condición que ostenta, la salud y la capacidad corredora, los planes de sus allegados pudieran proyectarla a las Breeders' Cup Distaff G1 en 1800 o a la Breeders' Cup Classic G1 en 2,000 metros, ambos en Keeneland el venidero 7 de noviembre.  

Hasta ahora su cuenta en premios exhibe balance de 7.371.520 dólares.

Directo a la Breeders' Cup

Otra prueba de suma importancia dentro del calendario hípico estadounidense, quizás la más relevante de este fin de semana en Churchill,  fue la Stephen Foster Stakes (G2) con una bolsa de 500 mil dólares a repartir, y que dio la clasificación directa hacia la Breeders' Cup al vencedor.

Se trata del macho Tom’s d’Etat, que respondió al mando del fusta peruano Miguel Mena, quien en perfecto binomio con su conducido no consiguió obstáculo para imponerse en 1,800 metros con un crono de 1:47.30, apenas dos centésimas por encima del impresionante récord (1:47:28) que Victory Gallop impuso el 12 de junio de 1999.

Así el pupilo del entrenador Albert Stall Jr llega a 11 victorias en 18 actuaciones, y registro perfecto este 2020 de 2-2 que le representan 390.700$ más para su cuenta.

Al respecto, su jinete Mena aseguró sentirse muy contento por tan importante triunfo, sobre todo para proyectar el futuro inmediato, por lo que expresó amplio agradecimiento al trainer y especialmente a los dueños del GMB Racing, por la oportunidad que le brindan.

Indicó el jinete sureño que “el caballo, que es uno de los mejores del país, está atravesando su mejor momento y lo demuestra en la pista”.

La carrera, que fue la central de la programación, según los analistas se suponía un cerrado duelo entre Tom’s d’Etat (Smart Strike en Julia Tuttle por Giant’s Causeway) y By My Standards (Goldencents en A Jealous Woman por Muqtarib), porque ambos llegaron al compromiso con racha de tres victorias al hilo. Pero en la pista solo se vio uno: el conducido de Mena, que apunta para más. “Espero que siga así”, puntualizó muy esperanzado en nuevas victorias el destacado jockey.

¿A Kentucky o Saratoga?

La otra competencia de relevancia en Churchill Downs fue el Regrets Stakes G3 con $100K como bolsa, ganado de manera dramática por la yegua Harvey’s Lil Goil, a expensas del efectivo jinete mexicano Martín García, quien hubo de emplear su sabiduría y experiencia para superar en cerrado final a la francesa Crystal Cliffs.

De esta manera retoma la ruta ganadora la excelente corredora que ha demostrado rendir tanto en grama como en arena y quedó con clara oportunidad de ir a disputar el Kentucky Oaks (G1) allí en Churchill o ir a buscar la gloria sobre la pista de grama al enfrentar la Turf  Tiara en Saratoga.

Existe un agradable problema para tomar la decisión, porque de cualquier manera esta hija del triplecoronado American Pharoah en Gloria S por Tapit, tiene pedigree además de calidad que le adicionan opciones claras. Será su trainer William Mott quien tenga la última palabra con respecto a Harvey’s Lil Goil, que deja foja de 5-3 y 154.529 dólares de producción.

Newspaperofrecord ha madurado

Nueva York, la ciudad de los ocho millones de historias, fue escenario el pasado sábado de cuatro Stakes de Grado mientras que el domingo se dio el Bouwerie Stakes para yeguas naturales del patio.

En la prueba de mayor relevancia de Belmont Park, el Just A Game Stakes G1, bajo el mando del boricua Irad Otiz Jr se impuso la irlandesa Newspaperofrecord, del campeonísimo entrenador Chad Brown, quien además de presentar en la misma prueba a la enemiga teórica Uni, con este triunfo eleva a cuatro la seguidilla de años en que se ha impuesto en la carrera, por cierto, con jinetes latinos.

En 2017 fue con Antonoe (monta del multicampeón venezolano Javier Castellano; en 2018 fue Irad Ortiz quien condujo a la alemana A Raving Beauty; el año pasado repitió Castellano al conducir exitosamente a Rushing Fall y ahora volvió el doble ganador del Eclipse Award 2018-2019, Irad Ortiz Jr con Newspaperofrecord. Todas las ocasiones bajo la preparación de Chad Brown, quien confirma ser el amo del Just a Game.

Previo a la competencia había gran expectativa entre el público hípico (que por los momentos disfruta la actividad desde su casa debido a las restricciones que demanda la pandemia), debido a la calidad de las inscritas, pero la pupila del Klaravich Stable simplificó todo y acabó con las dudas y con sus rivales, porque el boricua Ortiz la soltó para que tomara el mando desde el momento de la largada y se dedicó a galopar sobre grama para ganar de extremo a extremo con un crono total de 1:35:62 para la milla, lo que generó muy buena impresión en el ya experimentado jinete, quien proyecta mejores situaciones para el equino.

“Creo que Newspaperofrecord ha virado mejor como cuatroañera; es decir que ha madurado mentalmente; se relajó mucho mejor”, indicó.

Explicó que  “cuando ella se relaja como lo hizo la última vez va a hacer buen papel en cualquier carrera donde participe”. Al tiempo agradeció la oportunidad de volver a ganar el Just A Game “que es una carrera muy importante para nosotros… Y esperamos que siga mostrando lo buena yegua que es”, puntualizó.

La castaña irlandesa Newspaperofrecord obtiene así su segunda victoria corrida desde que reapareció luego de inactividad de casi un año, que rompió con triunfo en el Intercontinental Stakes G3 de Belmont Park en 1400 metros sobre grama. Además, este triunfo es el segundo de corte selectivo G1 para la pupila de Brown, quien la había puesto en ganancia en la Breeders Cups Juvenile Fillies Turf de Churchill Downs, en la milla sobre grama en noviembre de hace dos años.

Ahora la impresionante hija del líder semental irlandés Lope de Vega en Sunday Times por Holy Roman Emperor, tiene 5 primeros y un segundo en ocho pruebas disputadas con ganancias cercanas al millón de dólares (988.250$).

Seguiría el yugo del boricua Ortiz Jr quien volvió a pasar el disco de ganadores, esta vez sobre el lomo de Firenze Fire, que ante el inesperado retiro de Promises Fulfilled no tuvo enemigos para obtener el lauro en el True North G2 en la arena de Belmont.

Este caballo, ha demostrado ser rendidor por demás en esta pista donde ha alcanzado cuatro triunfos en siete intentos además de un segundo lugar.

Así, el consentido del Mr Amore Stable y entrenado por Kelly Breen deja récord de 3-2 este 2020, con lo que suma 11 triunfos en 26 actuaciones, además de 3 posiciones de escolta y dos terceros lugares, con lo cual aproxima sus ganancias a los 2 millones de dólares ($1.939.250).

Sobre la calidad de Firenze Fire, Ortiz indicó que “es un caballo que siempre da el 100% en la pista y yo lo he montado por bastante tiempo. Me gusta montarlo. Es buen caballo. Siempre deja el corazón en la pista”.

Ortiz agradece la conexión con este ejemplar y considera que seguirá ganando: “Bien contento de poder seguir montándolo y poder llevarlo al winner circle”.

Sorprendió Victim Of Love

En el Vagrancy sobre distancia de 1,300 metros (6 ½ furlongs) que repartió 100.000 dólares se impuso el panameño Jose Lezcano, quien sobre los lomos de Victim of Love sorprendió a propios y extraños porque la hija de Speightstown en Spacy Tracy por Awesome Again no estaba entre las favoritas para alzarse con la victoria.

No obstante, la rendidora yegua entrenada por Todd M Beattie demostró estar en perfectas condiciones. Con su performance deja foja de 15 carreras con 5 victorias, 2 segundos y 2 terceros para una producción de 279.829 dólares. Enhorabuena para los colores de Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC.

Le correspondió el turno a una de las carreras más llamativas sobre grama donde resultó ganadora la yegua Mean Mary en el marco del New York (G2) con la conducción de otro de la zona del Canal, el efectivo Luis Sáez en distancia de 2 kilómetros en grama.

La castaña cuatroañera hija de Scat Daddy en Karlovy Vary por Dynaformer tomó el control desde la partida y se impuso con tiempo final de 2:01.85, por cinco cuerpos y ¼, escoltada por My Sister Nat, y en el tercer lugar arribó Feel Glorious.

Ahora, esta entrenada de H. Graham Motion y propiedad de Alex Campbell Jr, tiene campaña de cinco triunfos (este año de 3-3) en siete actuaciones, incluyendo los clásicos La Prevoyante S (G3), el Orchid S. Rood and Riddle (G3) y este de Nueva York (G2), para una producción de 396.160 dólares.

A decir de su efectivo jinete, este ejemplar que ha demostrado desempeñarse muy bien en grama en distancias largas, muestra  óptimas condiciones en cancha. “Cada vez que corre la siento mejor. Estoy seguro de que ella da más. Las veces que la he montado no la he exigido del todo. Siempre la cuido. La conservo para algo grande que pronto demostrará”, aseveró el centroamericano Sáez, a la vez que pidió “ojalá siga sana esta buena yegua y será una leyenda, con el favor de Dios”.

Critical Value está de regreso 

Por si fuera poco lo hecho por los jinetes hispanos en los principales óvalos del hipismo estadounidense el broche de oro lo puso el venezolano Junior Alvarado, quien  luego de mostrarse muy recuperado de la aparatosa rodada que sufrió de los lomos del ejemplar No Salt, derrochó toda su clase al mando de la pupila del Stud Ten Strike Racing, en el Stakes exclusivo para nativas del patio, en el  que se impuso de manera contundente. Junior nos comento que la caida lo asustó bastante y que pensaba que podía tener una fractura en alguna parte de su cuerpo, pero que gracias a Dios el día domingo amaneció en plenitud de condiciones gracias a los masajes que recibió en el cuarto de jinetes.

“Me pareció una reaparición excelente la de Critical Value ya que lo hizo de una manera muy fácil sin tener que ser exigida a fondo, a pesar del incómodo puesto de partida adentro al final nos favoreció bastante ya que ahorramos terreno toda la vuelta hasta los 500 metros fínales cuando la saque afuera, llame a correr y respondió de inmediato, en menos de 100 metros ella las pasó se vino en forma relativamente hasta la meta” Indicó el destacado jinete venezolano. 

La hija de Bodemeister en See The Forest por Forestry tardó 1:23:07 para cubrir los 1,400 metros sobre arena en el óvalo de Belmont, donde aventajó por 4 cuerpos ½ sobre Big Q y Naked Avenger.

La criada por Marshall K Gramm & Clay Sanders y entrenada por Jeremiah C Englehart alcanzó con este su segundo triunfo clásico (aparte del Maid of the Mits además de un cuarto lugar en el Demoiselle (G2), de tres totales en cinco salidas para una producción de 266.000 dólares.

A Gala of Racing at Churchill and Belmont

The past weekend included memorable performances and qualification to the Breeders’ Cup

United States horse racing, in the pandemic era, has been upheld through the relentless action of its exemplary performers, and delivered by trainers and breeders who support the continuing development of the sport. And of course, through the determination of the jockeys – many of whom are Latin American – whose excellence and daring is inscribed week by week at the top of the charts and at the most prestigious levels.

This past weekend was a demonstration of this with a gala of horse racing between Churchill Downs and Belmont Park, from select stakes to qualifiers for major prizes like the Breeders’ Cup.

In the case of Churchill Downs in Louisville, we begin with the triumphant performances from a pair of Steve Asmussen trainees, who won two races in a convincing manner.

In the Bashford Manor Stakes, with a purse of $100,000, a spectacular run was staged by the bay colt Cazadero, culminating in an overwhelming triumph by 4 ¾ lengths. He is now a winner of two races, accumulating $106,160 in earnings.

The son of Street Sense out of Wild Gams by Forest Wildcat, born in Kentucky and representing the colors of Stonestreet Stables LLC, responded to the demands of Panamanian jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. The test went in flying fractions of :21.24, :45.12, and :57.23, which favored the attack of the winner, who stopped the needle at 1:09.73 for the 6 furlongs on dirt.

After that runaway triumph, the Panamanian Santana assured that: “the horse is working super well in the mornings, but the thing I like the most is despite that he’s a 2-year-old colt he acts like a professional [with experience].”

He explained that the noble equine allows himself to be taught, and responds clearly to what his rider tells him. “I only ask that God keeps me healthy to compete together at the highest levels. I think this horse has a big future,” he said.

The Queen Keeps Winning

The other notable winner under the instruction and preparation of the successful Steve Asmussen was the queen of North American racing, Midnight Bisou. She flaunts the 2019 Eclipse Award for Champion older dirt female, and returned from a second-place finish in her most recent test run on Feb. 29 in the race that provided the juiciest prize in the world (US $20 million), the 1,800-meter (about 1 1/8 miles) Saudi Cup at the King Abdulaziz Racecourse, where she had to settle for escorting Maximum Security past the finish.

The outstanding daughter of Midnight Lute out of Diva Delite, by Repent, literally jumped onto the Churchill Downs track to overpower the six opponents who challenged her in the Fleur de Lis Stakes, a Grade 2 race with a prize of $200,000. With the ride of the experienced Mike Smith, the diva of horse racing took advantage at the expense of the excellent galloper Serengeti Empress, who could not take the pressure, and around the far turn gave way to the winner. Her escort Motion Emotion came in second, and Another Broad ended up third.

Mike Smith was so impressed with the talent flaunted by the mare to the point of classifying her to such high esteem as “an amazing mare.” She prevailed by more than eight lengths and registered a time of 1:48.99 for the distance of 1 1/8 miles (1,800 meters). She runs and the rest is history.

Now she has 13 wins, five seconds, and three thirds from 21 starts on the track. She has won eight of her past 10 starts, including three Grade 1s, among which stands out the Personal Ensign, which she won in Saratoga in 2019 and appears to profile as her next probable start in 2020 on Aug. 1.

Later in the year, as a result of her talent, health, and running capacity, the plans of her connections could direct to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff at a 1 1/8 miles or to the Longines Breeders Cup Classic at 1 ¼ miles at Keeneland Nov. 7.

At this point, her career earnings total $7,371,520.

Directly to the Breeders’ Cup

Another test of rising importance on the U.S. racing calendar, perhaps the most notable event of this past weekend at Churchill, was the Stephen Foster Stakes with a purse of $500,000, which offered the winner a direct qualification to the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The victor was the 7-year-old horse Tom’s d’Etat, who responded to the command of Peruvian jockey Miguel Mena. In perfect unison with his mount, they encountered no obstacles throughout the 1 1/8 miles, with a time of 1:47.30, just two hundredths of a second above the impressive record (1:47.28) that Victory Gallop set on June 12,1999.

In that way, the pupil of trainer Al Stall Jr. arrives at 11 victories in 18 starts, and a perfect record of 2-for-2 in 2020, accumulating $1,627,272 in career purse earnings.

About the win, Mena assured that he felt very happy for such an important victory, and above all for the immediate future, for which he expressed many thanks to the trainer and especially owner G M B Racing for providing him the opportunity.

The South American rider said: "The horse, who is one of the best in the country, is at his peak form, and shows it on the track."

According to analysts, the race, which was the highlight of the program, was assumed to be a close duel between Tom’s d’Etat (Smart Strike out of Julia Tuttle, by Giant’s Causeway) and By My Standards, because they both arrived with an even three-race win streak. But on the track you could only see one: the mount of Mena, who aims for more.

“I hope it continues like this,” the outstanding jockey expressed hopefully.

To Kentucky or Saratoga?

Another notable competition at Churchill Downs was the Grade 3 Regret Stakes with a $100,000 purse. The race was won in dramatic fashion by the filly Harvey’s Lil Goil, through the determination of the effective Mexican jockey Martín García, who had to employ his wisdom and experience to overcome a close finish with the French-bred filly Crystal Cliffs.

Returning to winning form that she has previously demonstrated, she has shown that she can perform on grass and dirt, leaving a clear opportunity to compete in the Longines Kentucky Oaks at Churchill or search for the glory over the turf course in the Turf Tiara at Saratoga.

It’s a good problem to have when making the decision, and this daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah out of Gloria S, by Tapit, has pedigree and quality which add clear options. It will be her trainer, Bill Mott, who has the last word with respect to Harvey’s Lil Goil, whose has three wins from five starts and $154,529 in earnings.

Newspaperofrecord has Matured

New York, the city of eight million stories, was the scene last Saturday for four graded stakes, and on Sunday the Bouwerie Stakes for New York bred 3-year-old fillies.  

The test of highest esteem at Belmont Park over the weekend was the Grade 1 Just a Game Stakes. Under the command of Puerto Rican jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., the Irish-bred Newspaperofrecord prevailed. She is from the barn of champion trainer Chad Brown, who in the same test presented the most logical challenger, Uni (GB), and with the triumph brought his tally to four consecutive years of dominating the race, all of which with Latino jockeys.

In 2017, it was with Antonoe, ridden by multiple champion Venezuelan Javier Castellano; in 2018, it was Irad Ortiz who rode A Raving Beauty to victory; and last year, Castellano won the race for the fourth time in his career by successfully piloting Rushing Fall. Now we’ve returned it to the dual winner of the 2018-2019 Eclipse Award for champion jockey, Irad Ortiz Jr., with Newspaperofrecord. Brown has confirmed himself as the master of the Just a Game.

Prior to the competition there were great expectations among the racing public (who for the moment enjoy the activity from their homes due to restrictions imposed by the pandemic), due to the quality of the entries. But the Klaravich Stable pupil simplified everything and ended the doubts of her rivals.

Ortiz released her to take command from the start, galloping on grass from gate to wire to win with a time of 1:35:62 for the mile, emitting praise from her experienced rider, who believes positive things will happen for the filly going forward.

“I think Newspaperofrecord has improved as a 4-year-old; that’s to say that she has matured mentally, she relaxes much better,” he said. He explained that “when she relaxes like she did last time, she’ll do well in any race she runs in.”

He appreciated the opportunity to win the Just a Game again, “that it is an important race for us … we hope to keep showing was a good filly she is,” Ortiz stated.

The bay Newspaperofrecord obtained her second consecutive victory, reappearing after almost a year of inactivity. Her 2020 debut victory was in the Grade 3 Intercontinental Stakes at Belmont Park at 7 furlongs on the turf. Moreover, this triumph is the second Grade 1 for the Chad Brown pupil, who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs in 2018.

Now the impressive daughter of a leading Irish stallion Lope de Vega out of Sunday Times, by Holy Roman Emperor, has five wins and a second in eight contests, with winnings nearing $1 million ($988,250).

Ortiz continued to make another pass through the winner’s circle, this time on the back of Firenze Fire, who after the scratch of Promises Fulfilled, had no real enemies to obtain the award in the Grade 2 True North at the Belmont arena.

This horse has proven to be an outstanding performer on this track, where he has achieved four wins in seven attempts in addition to a second-place finish. Owned by Mr. Amore Stable and trained by Kelly Breen, he brings his record to two wins from three starts in 2020, and raises his career record to 11 wins from 26 starts, in addition to three runner-up performances and two thirds, with approximate earnings of $2 million ($1,939,250).

About the quality of Firenze Fire, Ortiz said, “he is a horse who always gives 100% on the track, and I’ve ridden him plenty of times. I like riding him. He’s a good horse. He always leaves his heart on the track.”

Ortiz gave thanks to the connections, and believes he can keep winning. “I’m happy to keep riding him and taking him to the winner’s circle.”

Victim of Love Surprises

In the $100,000 Vagrancy Handicap at a distance of 6 ½ furlongs (1,300 meters), Panamanian Jose Lezcano came through on the back of Victim of Love, surprising everyone, as the daughter of Speightstown out of Spacy Tracy, by Awesome Again, had the longest odds of the field.

Nevertheless, the victorious filly trained by Todd Beattie demonstrated that she was in perfect form. With that performance, she notches five victories from 15 races, two seconds, and two thirds for earnings of $279,829. Good work for the colors of Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC.

Then came one of the most striking races on the turf, which resulted in Mean Mary crossing the finish line first in the 1 ¼-mile, Grade 2 New York Stakes. She was under the direction of another from the zone of the Canal, the effective Panamanian Luis Saez.

The dark bay 4-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy out of Karlovy Vary, by Dynaformer, took control from the start and finished with a final time of 2:01.85, winning by 5 ¼ lengths, followed by My Sister Nat, and Feel Glorious arriving for third.

This filly, trained by Graham Motion and owned by Alex Campbell Jr., has amassed five wins (this year she is 3-for-3) from seven starts, including the Grade 3 La Prevoyante Stakes, the Grade 3 Orchid Stakes, and now the New York, for earnings of $396,160.

Her jockey has said that this filly, who has demonstrated that she can perform well over long distance on the turf, shows great form on the track.

“Every time she runs it gets better,” Saez said. “I’m sure she will give more. The times I have ridden her I have never asked her for everything. I always take care of her. I’m conserving her for something big that will soon show.”

Added Saez, “I hope this good mare stays healthy and can be a legend, with the grace of God.”

Critical Value Returns in Top Form

As if that wasn’t enough, with all that had been accomplished by Hispanic jockeys at the principal U.S. tracks, the finishing touch was put on by Junior Alvarado, who won the Bouwerie Stakes on Sunday aboard Critical Value. The Venezuelan had recovered to ride after a dramatic roll off a mount on Friday, June 26 – No Salt, who ducked in sharply after springing from the gates in a maiden special weight, and lost Alvarado after hitting the railing.

Alvarado used all of his class to command the pupil of Ten Strike Racing in the stakes exclusive to New York-bred 3-year-old fillies, which he won with force. He commented that the fall scared him enough, as he thought he might have a fracture in some part of his body, but Alvarado said that thanks to God and to the massages he received in the jockeys’ room, on Sunday he woke up in good condition to ride.

“It appeared to me an excellent reappearance for Critical Value, and she did it easily without having to be used up. Despite the uncomfortable starting position inside, in the end it favored us a lot since we saved ground all the way up to the final 500 meters when I took her outside. I asked her to run and she responded immediately, in less than 100 meters she passed them and came in good form down to the wire,” said the Venezuelan jockey.

The daughter of Bodemeister out of See the Forest, by Forestry, recorded a time of 1:23.07 while covering the 7 furlongs on dirt at Belmont. She won by 4 ½ lengths over runner-up Big Q with Naked Avenger in third.

Bred by Marshall K Gramm and Clay Sanders and trained by Jeremiah Englehart, Critical Value achieved her second stakes victory, adding to her Maid of the Mist Stakes win, plus a fourth in the Grade 2 Demoiselle, for three total wins in five starts and earnings of $266,000.
