Preakness Quick Sheet: Get to Know the 2021 Preakness Horses
Tips for Navigating Pimlico on Preakness Day
Events / TravelThe 143rd Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore is the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, the people’s race and the people’s party. The Preakness is a little different than the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve or Belmont Stakes. Featuring a full-fledged festival in the infield, patrons can rock out to the hottest bands while playing the ponies. This year the Budweiser InfieldFest brings Post Malone, ODESZA, 21 Savage, Frank Walker, and DJ Vice. Here are some dos and don’ts as your prepare for the day!
Do: Dress for Success
The first thing you should do Preakness morning is CHECK THE WEATHER – don’t just check, but really give it a good look. Located on "Old Hilltop," Pimlico can get a little breezy, and with it being spring you never know when you’ll be struck by a surprise rain shower. That being said, bring your foldable rain ponchos (nothing expensive) and sensible shoes – and ladies, talking to you, no heels in the infield, because unless they are wedges, you will sink into the ground. And of course, don’t forget your big hats and bowties!
Don’t: Stay in One Place
No matter where your seats are, from the infield to the grandstand, Pimlico offers a step back in time with modern amenities. If you’re in the infield, make sure to check out and explore the building to take in the historical sites. Doesn’t matter if it’s your 10th Preakness or your first, there is always more exploring to do!
Do: Sample All of the Food Trucks
Have a great day betting – and eating! With most ticket options granting you access to the infield there are always delicious food trucks offering different treats! There are ATM machines all around Pimlico Race Course, but make sure you bring some cash – one bankroll for betting and another for food! When in Baltimore, never say no to a warm gooey crab pretzel, and also, any corndog comes very highly recommended!
Don’t: Get Restless
Smile! You’re at the 143rd Preakness Stakes … but with that being said, be aware that there will be lines. Make sure you allow extra time before races to get your bets in. I’m not going to be your mother, but don’t wait till you can’t hold it any longer to go to the bathroom, because you will have to wait. If you want the best place to watch the Preakness, claim your spot early, and try to stake out to somewhere that gives you the best chance at a bird’s-eye view.
Do: Bet the Best Names
The Preakness Stakes might be the biggest race running, but there is still more money to be won betting the undercard races. If you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t bet millions – just start by putting a couple dollars on horses to win/place. Racing is unpredictable, and that 40-1 shot that you picked because you liked the name just might win and produce a big wad of cash! And don’t forget, rain or shine…HAVE FUN!
