California Burrito, an Army Mule colt bred in Kentucky, finished a distant sixth in his debut race at Ellis Park in late July 2024 but then rebounded to dominate a seven-furlong maiden claiming race held Sept. 27 on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs by six lengths. The colt then finished a good second in a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claiming race at Churchill in November to eventual 2025 Fasig-Tipton Risen Star Stakes winner Magnitude.

Trainer Tom Drury Jr. shipped California Burrito to Turfway Park for its winter meet, where he ran fourth in a one-mile allowance optional claiming race and then won one at the same distance by an overpowering 7 ¼ lengths to start his 3-year-old campaign in January 2025.
That set him up for a stakes debut in the 1 1/16-mile John Battaglia Memorial Stakes Feb. 22 at Turfway, a qualifying points race for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. Sent off as the 3.71-1 third betting choice in an 11-horse field, California Burrito set the early pace and gamely fended off a midstretch challenge from favored Baby Max to prevail by half-length. He earned 20 qualifying Derby points with the win.
California Burrito is out of the Hard Spun mare Bluegrass Sunset.
