Heinz H. Steinmann

Steinmann was 16 when his family emigrated from Switzerland to
California in 1948 and began to develop the state's skiing
industry. His father built the Mountain High Ski Area in the San
Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles. Steinmann is a graduate of UCLA
and was the captain of the college's ski team, which was unbeaten
between 1954 and 1956. He and his wife, Lora, took over the
management of the ski center, which they sold in 1984. Steinmann
spent some time caring for horses on farms in Switzerland,
purchased his first Thoroughbred in 1976 and has been in the racing
and breeding business ever since. He gives many of his horses names
with connections to his native country. The most successful is
Swiss Yodeler, a top 2-year-old in 1996 and a prolific sire for a
dozen years.
