King Russell was raised in class immediately upon winning the maiden race to take a shot in the Grade 1 $1.25 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on April 1. Sent off as thr 58-1 longest shot on the board in the field of 10, King Russell won a three-way battle for second under jockey Rafael Bejerano. The Arkansas Derby was a maximum points race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, and KIng Russell earned 40 points for his runner-up finish, potentially putting in the mix for a spot in the starting gate for the run for the roses.
