Blazing Sevens

Blazing Sevens began his career with a 6 1/4-length victory in his 2-year-old debut outing in a six-furlong maiden race at Saratoga on July 24, 2022, for trainer Chad Brown. Brown wasted no time raising this son of Good Magic up in class against stakes horses in his second start, which came in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 5. Blazing Sevens finished third in the Hopeful, beaten 12 lengths by Forte.

Blazing Sevens came right back against Grade 1 competition for his next start in the $500,000 Champagne Stakes at one mile at Belmont at the Big A, and this time he did not disappoint. Blazing Sevens closed from near the rear of the six-horse field and closed past the leaders in deep stretch to win off by 3 1/4  lengths in a time of 1:37.07 over a sloppy track under jockey Flavien Prat. The Champagne is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Win and You're In race, and with his victory, Blazing Sevens assured himself a spot in the starting gate for the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Nov. 4 at Keeneland.

In his subsequent start in the in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland on Nov. 5, Blazing Sevens raced near the back of the pack and closed to finish fourth. The Juvenile is part of the Road to the Triple Crown points series that determines the starters for the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 6, 2023, as is the Champagne Stakes. Blazing Sevens earned 10 points for his win in the Champagne and another six points for his fourth-place finish in the Juvenile.

Blazing Sevens was unplaced and beaten by 26 lengths in his season debut in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes, but he followed with a much-improved effort when third in the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes April 8 at Keeneland.

After the Blue Grass, Blazing Sevens was pointed to the May 20 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico by trainer Chad Brown, following what in the past had been Brown's winning model in the Preakness with Cloud Computing and Early Voting, who each skipped the Kentucky Derby and went directly to the Preakness off their final pre-Derby prep races. The move almost paid off as Blazing Sevens ran second in the Preakness, beaten just a head after a thrilling stretch battle with eventual winner National Treasure.
