Spirit Wind

Spirit Wind broke her maiden by 15 1/2 lengths in the first start of her 3-year-old year on Feb. 18, 2022 to kick-off what would be a breakout first half of the year. In her next two starts, she won the $100,000 Any Limit Stakes at Gulfstream on March 19 and then the $65,000 Musical Romance Stakes at Gulfstream on May 21 which led to a start in her graded stakes debut in the Grade 2 Princess Rooney Stakes, where she finished a respectable second on July 2 at Gulfstream Park. The Princess Rooney would be her final start of 2022.

Spirit Wind returned as a 4-year-old and won her first outing of 2023 with an optional claiming victory at Gulfstream on March 31. She ventured to Churchill Downs next for a start in the Grade 3 Winning Colors Stakes on May 29, but finished fourth and again went to the sidelines for several months after that race.

Spirit Wind came back again late in the year and won the Grade 3, $125,000 Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Dec. 23., going wire-to-wire at six furlongs on the dirt to top a field of seven by a half a length at the finish.

In 2024, the mare came back for a 5-year-old campaign under the direction of trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. She finished a close third in the Hurricane Bertie Stakes at Gulfstream Park, sixth after setting the early pace in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff Stakes at Churchill Downs, and then Spirit Wind tallied her first stakes win of the year with an impressive 3 ½-length score in the Memorial Day Sprint Stakes at Lone Star Park.

Elevated back to graded stakes company in the $200,000 Honorable Miss Stakes July 24 at Saratoga Race Course, Spirit Wind won the six-furlong Grade 2 sprint by three-quarters of a length in gate-to-wire fashion under Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith, tallying her seventh victory in 12 career starts.

Spirit Wind was bred in Florida by the sire Bahamian Squall out of the mare Sacred Psalm by Awesome of Course.
