As a 3-year-old in 2019, Chess Chief was graded stakes-placed twice. He finished second in the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer on Aug. 3, and was third in the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park on Sept. 29.
At age 4 in 2020, Chess Chief was third in the Grade 2 New Orleans Classic Stakes at Fair Grounds on Mar. 28.

In his 5-year-old debut, on Feb. 13, 2021, Chess Chief was third in the Grade 3 Mineshaft Stakes at Fair Grounds. He followed up that performance with a game victory in the Grade 2 New Orleans Classic Stakes on Mar. 20. He came from off the pace to rally down the stretch and win by a nose over favored Owendale.
After several defeats in stakes company throughout 2021, Chess Chief capped his 5-year-old season with a close win in the Tenacious Stakes at Fair Grounds on Dec. 26 at 10.10-1. He rallied boldly in the stretch and won a photo finish over Happy American.
