Vequist

Vequist, a Nyquist filly trained by Robert Reid Jr., finished second in her career debut at Parx Racing on July 29, 2020. She pressed the pace throughout in the 4 ½-furlong race and continued gamely through the stretch, losing by a nose. Gary Barber and Wachtel Stable purchased 75 percent of Vequist from breeder Swilcan Stable after her first start, and her owners shipped the filly to Saratoga for a start in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 6.

In the seven-furlong Spinaway, Vequist pressed the pace again through the first half mile, and powered clear at the top of the stretch to win by a commanding 9 ½ lengths at odds of 6.60-1. In her final prep for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Vequist finished second by two lengths to Dayoutoftheoffice in the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes Oct. 10 at Belmont Park.

Somewhat overlooked in a loaded Juvenile Fillies field on Nov. 6 at Keeneland at 6-1 odds, Vequist saved ground under Joel Rosario and found room along the rail to overtake pacesetter Dayoutoftheoffice in midstretch en route to an impressive two-length win, her second in four career starts. That win in the World Championships made Vequist the favorite to earn champion 2-year-old filly honors at the Eclipse Awards, and her connections took home the trophy on Jan. 28, 2021.

Vequist is out of the winning and Grade 2-placed Mineshaft mare Vero Amore.
