Texas Red was purchased at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale for $17,000. After a good second-place debut at Arlington Park, the colt was shipped west to train in Southern California where he broke his maiden at a mile two starts later.
In his first try on dirt, Texas Red finished third behind American Pharoah in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita Park, and he tried the same distance and surface in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, this time winning by open lengths.

Texas Red was second in his 3-year-old debut but missed the Triple Crown with an injury. He returned in July with a runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes before outfinishing Frosted to take the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes on Aug. 1. He finished fifth in the Travers Stakes and was given a rest, with a return to the races planned for 2016.
Texas Red is by Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Afleet Alex and out of the graded stakes-placed Chilean mare Ramatuelle.
