Skinner finished fifth in his first career start for trainer John Shirreffs in July 2022 in a sprint at Del Mar, but Shirreffs was encouraged enough that he entered the bay Curlin colt in the Runhappy Del Mar Futurity and he finished third. He then finished his 3-year-old campaign finishing a well-beaten sixth in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at 1 1/16 miles.

Skinner opened his 3-year-old season back versus maidens and drew away to a confidence-building victory on Feb. 12, 2023, at Santa Anita Park. He was then tested next on the roa to the 2023 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve in the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes March 4 where Skinner finished third behind Practical Move to earn 15 points toward qualifying for the run for the roses.

Skinner's next outing was the Grade 1 $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 8, where he ran a solid effort to finish third when beaten a total of only a half a length. He earned 30 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby for his show finish, giving him 45 points overall and placing him on the Kentucky Derby bubble. He drew into the May 6 classic on April 27.

Graded stakes winner Winding Way, by Malibu Moon, is the dam (mother) of Skinner.
