A $450,000 purchase at the 2018 Keeneland September yearling sale, Silver State made his career debut Sept. 27, 2019, at Churchill Downs and won a 6 ½-furlong sprint in a dead heat as the 8-5 favorite, 9 ¾ lengths clear of the third-place finisher. He followed with a hard-fought runner-up finish by a nose on a sloppy track at Churchill in a Nov. 30 allowance race.

The bay Hard Spun colt made his stakes debut in the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes Jan. 18, 2020, at Fair Grounds and closed willingly to finish second. He followed with a third-place finish in the first division of the Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford Feb. 15 at Fair Grounds.
On Jan. 23, 2021, Silver State won his first stakes race. He won the Fifth Season Stakes at Oaklawn Park by a nose, getting up in the last few strides to defeat Hunka Burning Love on the wire. That win marked Silver State's third triumph in a row. He followed that up with a win in the Essex Handicap at Oaklawn on March 13, defeating Rated R Superstar in a stretch battle. He capped off an impressive Oaklawn season with a win in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap on Apr. 17, prevailing in a six-way stretch battle for his fifth win in a row and his first career graded stakes triumph.
In his next start, Silver State was sent off at 5.70-1 in the Grade 1 Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park on June 5. With a strong move up the inside, he surged to victory in 1:35.45. As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, Silver State earned a spot in the Grade 1 Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile for his win.
Following that win, Silver State finished third in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 7 and was second in the Parx Dirt Mile Stakes on Sept. 25. In the latter race, he struck the front late and looked clear, but was beaten when Mind Control re-rallied on his inside.
Silver State is out of the stakes-winning Empire Maker mare Supreme and hails from the family of 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos. He's trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr.
