Newgrange

Newgrange tallied his second win in as many starts with a 2 ¼-length front-running score in the Sham Stakes on New Year’s Day 2022 at Santa Anita Park. The Sham is a qualifying points race for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, but the Violence colt is ineligible to earn points for the Derby due to Churchill Downs’ banning any horses conditioned by his trainer, Bob Baffert. 

Newgrange added another graded stakes win to his credentials with a win in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Jan. 29. 

In his next race, Newgrange faded late in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes and finished sixth as the 4-5 favorite the effectively ended his run on the road to the 2022 Kentucky Derby.

He returned from an extended layoff in the Shared Belief Stakes in September 2022 at Del Mar and finished a well-beaten third. Newgrange got back on track in an allowance-optional claiming race Nov. 6 at del Mar and picked up a confidence-building 5 1/2 -length win. He closed out his 3-year-old campaign with a third against older horses in the Grade 3 Native Diver Stakes three weeks later at Del Mar.

Newgrange made his 4-year-old debut in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes Jan. 28, 2023, at Santa Anita Park, where he pressed the pace and battled gamely to post a one-length win.

Prior to the Sham, Newgrange won a six-furlong maiden race at Del Mar on Nov. 28. He was purchased for $125,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale in 2020 by co-owners SF Racing, Madaket Stables, and Starlight Racing. Other members of his ownership group are Golconda Stable, Siena Farm, Stonestreet Stables, Waves Edge Capital, Catherine Donovan, Robert Masterson, and Jay Schoenfarber.

Newgrange is out of the unraced Empire Maker mare Bella Chianti. His second dam (maternal grandmother) is Grade 2 winner Bella Chiarra.
