Hayes Strike won his maiden race in his second career start as a 2-year-old at Ellis Park on Aug. 20, 2022 when he won a one-mile dirt race by 4 1/2 lengths in a field of six. After that he was placed on the "road to the Kentucky Derby" with starts in such stakes races as the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs (finished fourth), the Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs (second), the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs (third), and the Gun Runner Stakes at Fair Grounds, where he concluded his 2-year-old campaign with a fourth-place finish on Dec. 26.
